What To Do When Someone Asks About Your Blog

March 27, 2017

Fuck, it happened. Yep, someone asked me about my blog, like to my face, in real life, no joke... You’re probably thinking I’m an absolute idiot because my blog and Instagram are public so any human being can read/see them. You’d think I’d be so excited because it means someone new will read my posts… not quite. The only people in my life that even know my blog exists are my mum and people I’ve met through blogging/fashion events, no one else really knows. I don’t want my friends and family to follow my blog just because they know me, I want people to follow it because they are genuinely interested. I think a lot of people start off with no one knowing, so why not post about it, maybe it will help someone?

I blog for fun, to extend my creativity, to work on my writing, mental/physical health, thinking/developing opinion and just to keep a diary that I can easily access, and I love it! It is quite possibly one of the best decisions I have made in the past year. Anyway, one of my friends from university said “I found your Instagram” and I literally thought I was going to either have a heart attack or run away and cry, I was fully prepared to just pretend I was invisible. By some fluke she was actually so lovely and supportive, she thought it was a really cool idea; I literally wanted to give her the biggest hug ever, it made my day!

Maybe I don’t actually need to be so anxious about people finding out, after all I can’t change their opinions; they will think whatever they want to think. I know that even though today my friend was so supportive, I’m guaranteed to get laughed at… not really excited about that… but I know it’s coming so why not prepare for it.

I’m not ashamed of my blog, I love it and have zero regrets, if someone insults it, it’s ok. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and people who don’t read blogs or haven’t even heard of blogging will find it strange. Blogging works for me. It’s such a great creative outlet and a way to meet like-minded people; overall, I feel less stressed, much more myself and am having fun, so blogging is here to stay.

What to do when someone finds out about your blog and asks you about it

1. Go with whatever reaction you have

You could be super excited or having a panic attack…  and both are ok! If someone recognised me at fashion week I would be jumping up and down with excitement, even in my 12cm heels! The current situation is the complete opposite but, it turned out way better than what I expected, so I’m actually pretty excited about it.

2. Be Confident

Once you’ve had your initial reaction it’s time for any quote/lyric that boosts your confidence! Be confident when talking about your blog, after all, you’ve put so much time and effort into it; be proud of it.

3. It’s their choice to read your blog

Not everyone is going to be supportive, so be prepared for that and address it. You aren’t forcing anyone to read your blog… If someone is complaining about your content or images just remind them that it’s their choice to read your blog and if they don’t like it, it's ok. Remind them that it’s a hobby, just like playing football, not everyone likes football…

4. Explain

If it’s your friend or family asking, you might have to explain why your blogging and what you love about it. Explain the amount of time and effort that goes into it. It seems so easy looking in from the outside, but coding isn’t easy, nor is coming up with original content or taking your own photos. They probably don't know this so it's up to you to inform them.

5. Take the time to talk to regular readers

If someone has gone to the effort to approach you and talk to you about your blog at an event or in everyday life, then talk to them. Not just small talk but find out why they read your blog; do they love your content or your photography? Finding out what your regular readers love about your blog is like finding gold! Make the most of it!

6. Be thankful

Be appreciative and let them know you’re thankful that they have taken the time to read your blog. With a million and one blogs out there, it’s a blessing when someone can relate to yours!
